Imenco to launch SubVIS Orca camera platform
Imenco will launch its latest SubVIS Orca camera platform with HD over Ethernet compatibility on 7 April.
The new camera is essentially a smartphone with a commercial subsea lens and housing rated to 4,000m. The camera will be driven by smartphone apps and can communicate with all sensors installed on Remote Operated Vehicles (ROV).
The camera platform was successfully tested by a major unnamed ROV manufacturer, after which Imenco produced five prototypes that are being shown at major regional exhibitions in the UK, US and Australia.
Imenco plans to build a range of new models on top of this platform, beginning with the main ROV camera.
Jan Wulfsberg, senior applications specialist, Imenco, said: 'When we talk with the ROV manufacturers and operators, they recognise that assimilating functionality or smartness into their digital video gives them a competitive edge.'
He added: 'Building the computer system gives us the ability to incorporate applications in the same ways that apps are used in mobile phones.
'A permanently placed camera, for example, can be used to detect leakage while elsewhere the settings may be tailored to recognise collision. While it is not possible to carry out exact measurements, it is possible to make estimates based on what else is in the picture.'
These apps will be available to users, and third-party software developers may launch more compatible apps. Imenco also expects some companies to integrate this platform into their own in-house systems.
Wulfsberg said: 'It is likely that operators will have a good understanding about what they intend to use the platform for. If they want to make changes, we can work together with the customer. However they will also be able to make their own software modifications. The platform allows them to interface with it quite easily.'
Imenco plans to introduce options for computer analysis based on the video displayed. It is currently assembling cameras that companies can integrate with their own control systems for testing. The final versions will be slightly smaller than the prototypes.
