Immersive simulation in Taiwan

A new virtual reality simulation system for small combat teams was displayed at the Taipei Aerospace & Defence Technology Exhibition (TADTE) from 13-16 August.

Called the Immersive Interaction Shooting Simulation System (i2s3), it allows a small combat team to practise missions in virtual reality.

The state-owned National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) formally started the project in February, although relevant technology was accumulated last year.

Chang Shy-Jenq, chief of the simulation systems section at the NCSIST’s aeronautical systems research division, said the system offered two key advantages. The first is that it is immersive, with soldiers sending and receiving communications,
