India to upgrade M-46 howitzers
As India looks to standardise its artillery pieces the MoD has signed a contract for the transformation of 300 M-46 towed howitzers.
The state-owned Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) was awarded a contract for the transformation of the M-46 towed howitzers into weapons of 155mm L/45 calibre on 25 October.
Current in-service M-46 guns are of a Russian design dating from the 1950s and are currently of 130mm L/52 calibre. The upgrade represents an effort by the army to standardise on artillery pieces of 105mm and 155mm. It also increases the range of these artillery pieces from 27km to around 39km.
