UK looks to US again as Wedgetail leads AWACS race

Recent speculation that the UK could procure the E-7 Wedgetail aircraft to replace its ageing E-3D Sentry’s looks to have been on the mark after it was revealed that discussions with manufacturer Boeing are currently taking place.

In a statement released on 3 October by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), Gavin Williamson, Secretary of State for Defence, said that both the OEM and the current operators of the platform - the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) – had been party to talks.

With the Sentry fleet in urgent need of modernisation as the platform falls further behind its NATO
