South Korea to host THAAD battery

In a long-anticipated move, South Korea and the US have agreed to base a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery on the Korean Peninsula.

The US Department of Defense (DoD) made an announcement to this effect on 7 July.

North Korean belligerence was given as the reason, the DoD statement saying, ‘North Korea’s nuclear test and multiple ballistic missile tests, including the recent intermediate-range ballistic missile launches, highlight the grave threat that North Korea poses to the security and stability of the Republic of Korea and the entire Asia-Pacific region.’
