The future Royal Navy's HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier has been fitted with the Artisan 3D radar system, BAE Systems announced on 6 October, marking a significant milestone in the build up to the vessel's sea trials.

The BAE Systems designed and developed radar system can simultaneously monitor over 800 objects at a range of 200m to 200km and cut through radio interference equivalent to 10,000 mobile phone signals.

The system has already been proven in service for air defence and anti-ship operations on-board the navy's Type 23 frigate.

Les Gregory, director for products and training services, BAE Systems, said: 'Artisan is a ground-breaking radar system that delivers real capability to the Royal Navy in its supreme accuracy and uncompromising tracking.  In addition, its world-leading electronic protection measure ensures that even the most complex of jammers will not reduce its effectiveness.

'We have already seen the radar perform excellently on the Type 23 frigates and are proud to be able to bring this advanced technology to the Royal Navy's new aircraft carriers utilising its air traffic management capability for the first time.'
