Russia looks towards eastern outposts

The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 27 May that personnel and equipment would be deployed to the Eastern Military District (MD), in a long-awaited move to increase its capabilities in the area.

The move could be seen as part of a wider strategy to strengthen maritime and port security of the Kuril Islands and Kuril Ridge. The archipelago is a string of more than 50 islands, which have been claimed by Japan since they were taken by Russian forces during World War II.
