Opinion: Royal Navy goes global, but treads fine line with China
The Royal Navy’s flagship, the amphibious assault ship HMS Albion, has spent much of 2018 deployed in the Far East supporting UK strategic interests in the region. This work has included supporting defence engagement with allies and partner nations, ranging from Australia to Vietnam, and supporting operations to help enforce the sanctions regime against North Korea.
This work forms part of a wider pattern of British military re-engagement in a region that has long taken a lower profile. The withdrawal from ‘East of Suez’ in the early 1970s, coupled with the focus on NATO and latterly operations in the Middle
