UK Cold Weather Survival training underway
The UK’s Aviation Task Force 2 is undergoing a Cold Weather Survival Course as part of the annual Exercise Clockwork deployment.
Aviation Task Force 2 is deployed to the high north and includes Royal Navy Merlin and Wildcat helicopters, Army Apache attack helicopters and Royal Air Force Chinooks.
The exercise trains forces for survival in arctic conditions, including training in how to build quinzee shelters from snow, ski and snow shoe use, ice breaking drills and tactical awareness.
The training, run by the Fleet Air Arm, is being carried out ahead of Arctic flying training, which will take place at Bardufoss in northern Norway.
While at Bardufoss the Wildcats will work with the Apaches, developing their ability to operate together. The aircraft will then move onto Exercise Cold Response, where they will be joined by Royal Navy ships and Royal Marines on the multinational exercise.
