British navy trains HMS Pembroke
The UK Royal Navy has been conducting training on its Sandown class minehunter HMS Pembroke off the west coast of Scotland, in order to prepare it for its deployment with NATO, the navy announced on 1 March.
Flag Officer Sea Training, the navy’s training organisation, oversaw and assessed the predeployment, where the ship's crew practiced flood and fire drills, gunnery, medical training, salvage exercises and mine hunting.
The exercise included simulated attacks from sea and air on the ship. Training ship Smit Towy conducted a mock attack from the water, while a Falcon aircraft flew overhead to provide the air threat. The scenario called for HMS Pembroke to take damage and the crew to practice stopping floods, as well as medical and fire-fighting skills.
The mine hunter will be deployed into the Baltic in April and will join NATO allies as part of the standing NATO mine counter measures group one.
