Germany bucks the European trend with ambitious frigate programmes

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, European navies were feeling the strain of procuring expensive platforms at the cost of fleet sizes. Ambitions to replace aging platforms with high-end vessels are being scaled back by some European navies – ongoing programmes such as Type 26 frigate in the UK may be trimmed back in favour of cheaper and less capable platforms if defence budgets are negatively impacted.

However, German frigate programmes seem relatively unscathed. For example, Shephard Defence Insight expects the Mehrzweckkampfschiff 180 (MKS 180) project to be the most expensive European frigate platform over the next ten-year forecast period. Following
