Smart munitions hold the key for Derivatsiya
Development and testing is underway of ‘smart’ ammunition for the 2S38 Derivatsiya-PVO self-propelled anti-aircraft gun (SPAAG), according to manufacturer Uralvagonzavod (UVZ).
However, the tactical role of the weapon system still appears slightly ill-defined and much depends on the successful introduction of the new ammunition. Failure would leave Derivatsiya reliant on conventional 57mm high-explosive and AP rounds, thereby limiting its air defence capabilities.
In this case, the SPAAG would fulfil a direct fire support role closer to that of the German Begleitepanzer 57, which was planned in the 1970s but not developed due to lack of demand.
