MGCS partners get green light for system architecture study

20th May 2020 - 18:00 GMT | by The Shephard News Team

KNDS (Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Nexter Systems) and Rheinmetall have obtained official approval from the BAAINBw to proceed with a system architecture definition study for the Main Ground Combat  System (MGCS) MBT.

The Franco-German MGCS programme is geared towards developing a new MBT to succeed the Bundeswehr’s Leopard 2 and the French Army’s Leclerc, starting in 2035. The architecture definition study is a step towards this goal as a prerequisite for development of an MGCS technology demonstrator.

Workshare in the 18-month System Architecture Definition Study (SADS) Part 1 is to be distributed equally between France and Germany. The main aims are to harmonise final MGCS concepts, analyse further details, and propose a common multi-platform architecture that aligns with the French Scorpion and German D-LBO digitisation programmes.
