Funding challenges confront main UK land programmes

The British Army is facing a huge challenge as it modernises its armoured vehicle fleet in the next decade. 

The UK National Audit Office's (NAO) report into the MoD Equipment Plan 2019-2029 indicated that defence  equipment and support costs will exceed budget by around £3 billion ($3.83 billion), with direct effects on vital programmes to replace and upgrade the army's vehicles.

An MoD spokesperson confirmed to Shephard that financial issues are in play and will influence the recently launched integrated review of UK security, defence and foreign policy.
