DefExpo 2016: Indian Army homes in on SAMs
An earlier survey of Indian Amy air defence requirements discussed antiaircraft artillery and VSHORADS. A third area of need is for short-range surface-to-air missiles (SR-SAM).
The US$1.5 billion SR-SAM project originally launched in 2012 calls for around 1,800 missiles plus launchers to equip two regiments.
Three shortlisted competitors after a global tender are the Saab BAMSE, Rafael SPYDER and Almaz-Antey Tor-M2KM. Trials were previously conducted in 2013-14.
Saab is offering BAMSE installed on an Ashok Leyland truck chassis, which has been tested in Sweden.
