Myanmar announces coast guard plans
The Myanmar government has announced that it will create a coast guard to help monitor the nation’s 2,080km-long coastline and to protect the country’s EEZ.
The revelation came on the website of the Ministry of Transport and Communication on 29 January, where the minister in charge U Thant Zin Maung said the new agency would ensure safety of sea routes, especially in areas where there is offshore drilling and deep-sea port construction.
The agency would also protect marine resources and respond to natural disasters and maritime accidents. For example, Myanmar was badly hit by Cyclone Nargis in May 2008. It
