US Navy approves Northrop's VMS 9.3
Northrop Grumman's Voyage Management System (VMS) version 9.3 has been approved by the US Navy on board the SSN and SSGN nuclear-powered submarines, as announced on 18 May.
Installation of the VMS 9.3 software package has already begun; it will be installed on four SSGNs and 55 SSNs in total.
Version 9.3 of the VMS supports polar operations and has higher rendering speeds than the previous version. According to Northrop Grumman, it seamlessly integrates with combat radar and mission planning submarine systems and enables real-time chart checking.
Capt John Zimmerman, Program Executive Office, Submarines, PMS 425, US Navy, said: 'VMS 9.3 brings significant performance and usability improvements over earlier versions and I appreciate the hard work by Northrop Grumman to make this a great product.
'Submarine Force feedback on VMS 9.3 has been very positive and the boats are excited to have it installed.'
Todd Leavitt, vice president, maritime systems, Northrop Grumman, said: 'These improvements in the VMS, along with a newly streamlined user interface, will help to dramatically improve the sailor's ability to navigate efficiently.'
