Two Indian consortia to build BMS

In a ground-breaking move, India’s MoD selected two rival consortia to develop a battlefield management system (BMS).

The development contract, signed on 25 February under the ‘Make India’ category of the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP), is worth $8.33 billion.

One consortium comprises state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) along with Rolta, while the other is made up of Tata Power Strategic Engineering Division (SED) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

They were required to form special-purpose companies and these two consortia were shortlisted from four contenders. Significantly, this is the first time the MoD has launched such a major network-centric development project
