Thales looks to enhance SMART-L BMD functions
Thales is analysing logged data from the recent Formidable Shield ballistic missile defence (BMD) exercise to see if modifications made to its SMART-L Multi Mission (MM) radar can be used for further technology enhancements.
The Formidable Shield exercise saw a Terrier-Oriole missile launched from the Hebrides, Scotland, which was intercepted by a US Navy SM-3 missile using data from the SMART-L MM. The Thales Nederland-developed radar was modified for the exercise and detected the target in its early stages.
Jan Struik, system architect group expert at Thales Nederlands Naval Mission Solutions, told Shephard that the SMART-L was modified to transmit Extended Long Range
