Australia is looking to improve its presence in space with a focus on communications and creating a dedicated segment of its defence forces committed to the domain.
Lockheed Martin Rotary Mission Systems has received a contract from the US Navy to upgrade components of the AN/ALQ-217 Electronic Support Measure (ESM) system installed on the E-2D aircraft.
The company will design, develop and integrate Advanced Digital Receiver/Processor and Active Front End (AFE) upgrades to the existing AN/ALQ-217 ESM receiver/processor and AFE weapons replaceable assemblies.
The AN/ALQ-217 ESM system is a variant of the AN/ALQ-210 adapted for large, fixed-wing aircraft. It provides the aircraft a broad situational awareness capability, performing passive emitter detection, identification and location.
In total Lockheed Martin will deliver 16 ESM ADRP upgrade hardware kits. Work is expected to be complete by June 2022.
