General Dynamics DMRs complete MUOS communications test
General Dynamics Mission Systems' four-channel Digital Modular Radios (DMRs) have completed a Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellite communications test, the company announced on 23 March.
The DMRs successfully used MUOS satellite communications and ground station simulators to make voice calls and complete data transmission to and from a US Army AN/PRC-155 two-channel Manpack radio.
DMRs are networking radios currently used by the US Navy on many vessels and on-shore locations. They feature open architecture standards, accommodating next-generation communications waveforms such as MUOS while continuing to provide functionality and interoperability.
Chris Marzilli, president, General Dynamics Mission Systems, said: 'The success of this test is important because it demonstrates the navy's work, in collaboration with the army, to deliver on the promise of the MUOS satellite communications to joint forces worldwide.'
DMR was the US military's first software-defined radio, and new upgrades and enhanced capabilities can be added by software with few hardware changes. The navy uses 500 four-channel DMRs worldwide at present.
