Elbit, Diehl to develop A400M DIRCM system
Elbit Systems and Diehl Defence have signed an additional agreement and extended their cooperation to develop a Directed Infrared Countermeasure (DIRCM) self-defence system for Germany's Airbus A400M military transport aircraft, Diehl announced on 2 June.
The new agreement between the companies expands their cooperation to self-defence systems for military transport and combat helicopters. It will provide a short-term realisation of protection systems to the German armed forces for their Airbus A400M, Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker and the P3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft.
The German armed forces also tasked Diehl with a risk reduction study involving a DIRCM system for the A400M, to be concluded in 2016. Diehl combined three system units of the J-MUSIC Multi-Spectral Infrared Countermeasure in a multi-turret system and conducted tests. The system provides 360-degree protection against infrared missiles targeting the A400M.
The companies are also extending their cooperation in the MUSIC family to add the compact Mini-MUSIC system, which features four IR sensors and a high-frequency laser, suited for combat and military transport helicopters.
