Japan not seeking extra Apaches… for now

Despite an ageing attack helicopter fleet, the Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF) has said it is not seeking additional Boeing Apache AH-64DJP attack helicopters. 

Japan originally planned to induct 62 Apache helicopters license-built by Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI). However, this order was drastically reduced to just 13 examples in a 2008 decision because of budgetary difficulties. 

While the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has not ruled out extra orders in the future, it said further buys were ‘not scheduled at this moment’.

In January, the MoD was ordered by the Tokyo High Court to pay damages of $298 million to FHI
