Indian ASW corvette programme cuts first steel

CSL is one of two shipyards building eight ships each for the Indian Navy’s ASWSWC programme.

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has commenced construction of its eight-ship Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASWSWC) programme for the Indian Navy (IN) with a steel-cutting ceremony for the first ship to be called INS Mahe (BY 523), the company announced on 1 December.

CSL is one of two shipyards – the other being Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) – building eight ships each (valued at INR63.11 billion, or $855.6 million) for the IN’s 16-ship ASWSWC programme.

Each shipyard is building a bespoke variant of the ASWSWC, working to a broad set of specifications laid down by the IN. CSL’s variant
