Opinion: US Navy escort force feeling the strain
The US Navy (USN) may be the largest and most capable navy on the planet but its escort force is stretched thinly across the globe, with only 86 escorts available for global duties. By the time deployments as part of carrier or amphibious battle groups are considered, there are very few spare vessels available to deploy independently to maintain presence across a volatile planet.
