GDLS wins Abrams upgrade contract
General Dynamics Land Systems has been awarded a contract by the US Army to upgrade M1A2 System Enhancement Package (SEP) Version 2 (v2) Abrams tanks to the M1A2 SEPv3 configuration, the company announced on 16 December. The contract is worth $92 million.
The upgrade is part of efforts to enhance the maintainability, survivability, power generation, fuel efficiency and network capability of the army's fleet of Abrams main battle tanks.
The company will conduct a pilot programme of six tanks before entering full-rate production.
Donald Kotchman, vice president, tracked combat vehicles, General Dynamics Land Systems, said: ‘Projected for full rate production within the next two years, the Abrams M1A2 SEPv3 will provide the army with the tank they need to dominate the battlefields of the future.’
