Billion dollar orders breathes life into Humvee
The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) might be entering its twilight years with the US Army as the service transitions to the newer Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV), but that doesn’t mean it is the end of the road for the ubiquitous Humvee.
The Pentagon announced on August 29 that it awarded a $2.2 billion five-year fixed price contract with vehicle manufacturer AM General for 11,560 brand new HMMWVs.
The vehicles are not destined for US service, however, and are instead assigned for foreign military sales customers worldwide, with the first order being earmarked for Afghanistan’s armed forces.
