Al-Khalid production lags behind capacity
Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT), the Pakistani state-owned manufacturer of heavy weapons, is producing around 18 Al-Khalid-I MBTs annually, but this figure is nowhere near its industrial capacity.
The factory is able to produce 50 to 60 tanks per year, but it in September 2017 it was constructing only the 22nd unit.
This rate of production is because of a budgetary squeeze, the senate’s Standing Committee on Defence Production was told in a hearing on 30 November. The committee promised to recommend to the government that the ‘budget disbursement process to HIT may be made smoother and quicker to achieve
