New Zealand becomes Poseidon’s next consort

The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) will get four new Boeing P-8A Poseidon MPAs to enhance its surveillance capability, with the government approving the US Foreign Military Sales purchase for NZ$2.346 billion ($1.6 billion) on 9 July.

The costs of the project will be ‘spread out over the medium term’ over the next few financial years through to 2025-26, according to an MoD statement.

The purchase price includes P-8A training systems, infrastructure and introduction-to-service costs, but the six P-3K2 Orions that have been in operation since the 1960s will not retire until at least 2023, when the P-8s are
