UK stalls on AWACS upgrades

The UK is falling behind with Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) upgrades due to budgetary constraints, according to officials at the Boeing San Antonio maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) site. 

With the NATO, French and US Air Force fleet all going through major upgrade programmes, the UK is the only fleet of the aircraft not going through an upgrade at the moment. 

Despite this the fleet of six UK AWACS is not yet outdated, according to Mark Ellis, director of airborne surveillance command and control aircraft.
