Thales launches SquadNet soldier radio
Thales has expanded its communications portfolio with the launch of SquadNet soldier radio, a new system designed to provide secure communications in a compact and rugged package.
The radio combines a networking waveform with programmable encryption, built-in GPS and Bluetooth, and offers extended functionalities such as simultaneous video, data and voice transmission.
The battery of the radio is detachable and can run for 28 hours. It is rechargeable by nearly any USB power source, minimising supply chain demands.
SquadNet features an enhanced proprietary waveform which is designed to deliver improved performance in difficult terrain, and an automatic relay mode that offers resilient coverage and extended range. Provided that one SquadNet is within range of another, voice communication and location data from all other radios on the network will be shared.
The position information is displayed on the screen of the radio with the help of built-in GPS. It provides situational awareness by displaying recent movement and location of the user and other soldiers sharing the same network when it is paired with an Android device.
The SquadNet app also includes web-bridge functionality that enables geographically separate squads to be linked via IP networks, such as 3G, LTE or Wi-Fi. This reach back capability enables the remote coordination of squads and expands the scope of operations.
