Northrop Grumman wins USAF contract
The US Air Force has awarded Northrop Grumman Corporation a contract to produce millicomputer replacement (MCR) 1553 processors.
The 18-month, direct standalone contract is worth $8.1 million. The MCR-1553 will replace the aging milliprocessor and core memory in the US Air Force ALQ-131 electronic countermeasures pod used on both the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the A-10 Thunderbolt.
"The MCR-1553 provides a quantum leap in processing and communication capability needed for current and future threat requirements for the ALQ-131," said Les Walraven, Northrop Grumman Technical Services MCR-1553 program manager. "Our technical ability to not only sustain critical electronic attack systems but modernize them to meet evolving sophisticated threats ensures our nation's warfighters always have the most advanced capabilities."
The MCR-1553 replaces a vintage processor. It has an onboard memory for in-flight data recording and provides Ethernet communications for advanced interface with other systems on the host aircraft.
