Leonardo's Osprey gets wings

The newly re-named Italian defence giant Leonardo has launched its new second generation AESA surveillance radar called Osprey.

The company – formerly Finmeccanica – told reporters on 3 May that had secured its first launch customer, Norway, under the Norwegian All-Weather Search And Rescue Helicopter (NAWSARH) programme.

Osprey is being fitted to the AW101 helicopter that is being supplied for this programme. Norway expected to receive 16 aircraft from 2017 that will be operated by the Royal Norwegian Air Force.

Deliveries will be completed in 2020. There are two further customers in the US with contracts secured after a competition
