In February 2014, a separatist movement emerged in the Crimea, backed by armed groups and with Russian military assistance, they took control of the region from the Ukrainian government. By mid-March the pro-Russian leadership in the Crimea that had seized power held a disputed referendum that set the scene for the signature of a treaty of accession to the Russian Federation.
