Russian Helicopters is set to begin delivery of modernised Ka-27M helicopters to the Russian Ministry of Defence, with the first aircraft having completed factory testing, the company announced on 22 August.

The Ka-27M was cleared for serial production in late June 2017. Work to modernise the helicopters is being conducted at the Kumertau Aviation Production Enterprise.

The modernised Ka-27M helicopter has a new tactical command system that includes new acoustic and magnetometric systems, a radio reconnaissance system, an information computation system and an active phased array airborne radar. This provides the helicopter with an all-around visibility and improved ability to detect submarines and ships.

The new aircraft will be deployed by Russian Naval Aviation in a range of missions, including aerial reconnaissance at sea, anti-submarine protection of naval groups, detection, tracing and destruction of submarines and ships and search-and-rescue.
