Osprey team chases further tiltrotor success

The team behind the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor is bullish that the first export sale to Japan is a sign of more international deals – despite lingering concerns about the cost of the platform.

Bell-Boeing received a $332 million contract on 14 July for five V-22B Block C tiltrotors for Japan through the US government’s foreign military sales mechanism, in what is expected to be a 17 aircraft order

Japan has previously expressed a desire for deliveries from 2015-19 and the overall FMS deal is projected as costing some $3 billion.

The Osprey’s range and payload are regarded as ideal
