BAE Systems has completed its technology development bridge programme for the US Army's Common Infrared Countermeasure (CIRCM) programme. CIRCM is a modular laser-based aircraft protection system, designed to protect US helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft from infrared guided missiles.

The company was awarded the $11 million, 12-month bridge programme to enable further development of its proposed solution following the two-year technology demonstration phase of the programme.

During the bridge programme, BAE Systems performed an action plan to ensure that the CIRCM would perform as well as its Advanced Threat Infrared Countermeasures and Common Missile Warning System (CMWS), currently used by the army.

The army plans to award a 26-month engineering, manufacturing, development contract later in 2015 for the delivery of 21 CIRCM systems.

Terry Crimmins, vice president and general manager of survivability and targeting solutions, BAE Systems, said: 'Closely aligned with the US Army's goals of providing high performance, agile, reliable, and best value solutions, we stand ready to deliver the next-generation aircraft survivability equipment to our brave armed forces.'

CIRCM is designed to be part of a suite of infrared countermeasures that also includes a missile warning system and a dispenser for flares. Both CIRCM and the dispenser receive the handoff from CMWS and provide appropriate countermeasures to defeat the threat.
