Europe reignites UCAV development efforts

Following lulls in the development of Europe’s two flagship UCAV programmes, flight testing has restarted for Neuron while Taranis is believed to have finally completed its maiden flight, sources have revealed.

The pan-European Neuron platform resumed its flight campaign in ‘recent weeks’ at Istres AFB in France, sources close to the French MoD confirmed. Elsewhere, the UK MoD said the British Taranis UCAV prototype flew for what is understood to be the first time in 2013.

Neuron was developed by a Dassault Aviation-led team that includes Alenia Aermacchi, Saab, EADS, HAI, RUAG and Thales. The UCAV first flew in 2012 at
