Canada expands Arctic satellites

Canada is expecting to release a Request for Proposal (RfP) in June 2016 for its Tactical Narrowband SATCOM (TNS) requirement.

The requirement is for an Arctic narrowband capability for military communications with an ultimate goal of having global coverage.

One of the most viable options is the use of a polar communications and weather (PWC) satellite which would significantly enhance communications and weather services in the Arctic region, according to Lt Col Abde Bellahnid, directorate of joint capability SATCOMS and SAR requirements at the DND.

Speaking at Global Milsatcom conference in London, Bellahnid noted that this is an expensive option. He said
