AFCEA West 2012: Datron unveils new manpack radio
Datron World Communications has launched a manpack variant of its high frequency (HF) software-defined radio.
Unveiling the new PRC7700H radio at the AFCEA West conference in San Diego on 24 January, Randy Hermes, product manager for the radio, said the company mainly has a customer base outside of the US, but is hoping that the sophistication of the new system will lead to demand from the US military.
The system has been ten months in development, and 'we're seeing some interest primarily in the base stations in the DoD’, Hermes said.
The radio is an IP addressable, HF software defined radio, which supports HF voice and data communications.
'The radio offers integrated 110B data, MELPe digital voice, digital encryption, 141B 2G and 3G ALE. Available in ruggedised manpack and mobile-mounted configurations, the radio extends voice and data communications to operations in remote regions of the world,' according a statement from the company.
The radio is based on the RT7700 IP-addressable digital HF radio, which is set to be shipped to its first two customers 'within the next two months', Hermes said.
He also confirmed that there are two international customers that are interested in the new manpack variant.
Meanwhile, the company is launching the Datron LINK-2 HF email and network management software next month, as well as the single band Guardian II VHF and UHF portable handheld transceiver. Datron is also launching the tri-band variant in August.
Customers for the company include countries in the Middle East, South America and Africa, and the new systems 'was definitely based on customer demand', Hermes said.
