Aero India 2021: IAF issues HAL with an RfP for basic trainers
At Aero India 2021, government-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) received an RfP from the Indian Air Force (IAF) for 70 indigenously built HTT-40 trainers, with an option for 38 more.
Once a contract is placed, production will take place at HAL’s facilities at Bengaluru and Nashik.
The IAF much needs these basic trainers as its fleet size increases. The 2009 grounding of its predecessor, the HAL-designed but obsolescent HPT-32 basic trainer, followed the loss of 17 aircraft and 19 pilots. Personnel lost confidence in the safety and performance of the aircraft.
