US joins anti-piracy effort
As the incidents of piracy across Asia escalate, the US will formally join a cooperation agreement aimed at coordinating the fight against the problem on 22 September.
The Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) was established in 2006 as the primary mechanism for information sharing and coordination in combating piracy and robbery against ships in Asia. The UK joined in May 2012.
Robert Gauvin, executive director of piracy policy at the US Coast Guard, said: ‘The high-risk waters of the Strait of Malacca are a concern for our US flagged vessels.’
