The Indian government reached a more than $3 billion agreement with Russia on 7 March regarding the lease of a third nuclear-powered attack submarine. However, detailed contract negotiations of indeterminate length are expected to follow this initial agreement.
The Indian Navy (IN) will not get its hands onto the Chakra III vessel until 2025 at the earliest, since the vessel will need to be refurbished by Russia first. Indian communications systems and sensors such as the Ushus integrated sonar and Panchendriya sonar suite being fitted.
The deal reportedly includes sustainment, spare parts, training and technical infrastructure.
