HII set to build next USN amphibious transport dock
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has been awarded a $1.5 billion fixed-price-incentive modification to a previous contract for the construction of an amphibious transport dock LPD 31.
The vessel will be the 15th San Antonio-class built for the USN by the company and its second Flight II LPD.
Brian Cuccias, President of HII said: ‘We are all proud to be building these great ships, and will continue to deliver the most survivable and affordable ships possible for our customers and our nation.’
The Flight II LPD programme involves more than 600 different manufacturers and suppliers including 387 small businesses and the construction of each vessel ensures 1,500 shipbuilding jobs.
San Antonio-class ships are 684ft long and 105ft wide making them capable of augmentation with VTOL aircraft such as the V-22 Osprey.
Three more San Antonio-class are currently under construction with the company having previously supplied 11 completed ships to the USN.
