Global maritime presence for Poseidon
The US Navy’s Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) will attain a global presence in the next few years, with permanent overseas deployments to the Fifth and Sixth Fleets covering the Middle East, North Africa and Europe.
Speaking to the media during a briefing at the RIAT air show on 17 July, navy officials disclosed that Sheik Isa airbase in Bahrain would be the site of the P-8 deployment for the Gulf region, and a further detachment would be operating with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean by 2017-18.
