Egypt receives first MRAP vehicles
The first batch of Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles being transferred to the Egyptian military from the US Department of Defense (DoD) has arrived in the Port of Alexandria ahead of official delivery.
The vehicles are being supplied to Egypt under the US DoD’s Excess Defense Articles grant programme, in which the vehicles are transferred at no-cost to the government of Egypt. A total of 762 MRAPs will be delivered in total.
The heavily armoured MRAP vehicles are specifically designed to protect soldiers from blasts from improvised explosive devices (IEDs), landmines, and from other types of attacks. The vehicles will give the Egyptian military new capabilities to combat terrorism and promote stability in the region.
Major General Charles Hooper, US Embassy senior defense official in Cairo, said: ‘The delivery of these MRAPs to Egypt provides a crucial capability needed during these times of regional instability and is part of the continuing strong relationship between the US and Egypt.’
