Romania aims for 2% defence spend
A plan for modernization of Romania’s national army from 2015-2027 has been given the green light.
It is expected that this will see defence spending reach 2% of GDP in line with NATO requirements, up from the current 1%. The plan also approves the use of the national armed forces in missions and operations abroad.
According to Traian Băsescu, who served as the fourth President of Romania from 2004-14, the unpredictable behaviour of Russia has forced the Romanian government to take this action.
