Saab hopes Australia will take Barracuda bait
Saab has sold the MCS to around 30 countries to date. (Saab)
Saab has selected Australian firm SME Global Defence Solutions (GDS) to manufacture the Barracuda Mobile Camouflage System (MCS) for the Australian market, according to an announcement made on 6 April.
Andy Keough, MD of Saab Australia, commented: ‘Australian industrial involvement is critical to the success of our sovereign defence industry and together with GDS, our partnership is another example of creating local capability and new opportunities for Australian industry.’
The move is interesting because Saab previously pushed its Barracuda MCS to the Australian Army. It was tested on the M1A1 Abrams tank, for instance, but it was never selected.
