PLA unsheathes its Sharp Claws

7th May 2020 - 00:00 GMT | by Gordon Arthur in Christchurch

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is now known to be using UGVs for reconnaissance purposes, with the first evidence of their use by the Chinese military emerging recently on Chinese social media.

In a Sina Weibo microblog post on 13 April, the Eastern Theatre Command confirmed its usage of Norinco’s Sharp Claw 1, which is the same type that had featured on a CCTV programme two days earlier.

However, it is unclear when this UGV might have entered service, nor in what numbers. Significantly, though, it is the first such UGV confirmed to be in service with the PLA.
