Indian Army buying more BMP-2s, updating tank fleet
India's Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved the acquisition of 156 BMP-2/BMP-2K IFVs on 20 February, which will be licence-produced by the state-owned Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).
The DAC released funds of $175.5 million for these, as well as additional money for a survey training vessel to be built locally for the Indian Navy. This vessel will perform hydrographic surveys of ports and harbours.
The government stated: ‘This procurement will meet the operational requirement of the troops in rapid deployment of mechanised forces.’
The BMP-2K is a command variant of the standard BMP-2.
